I'm planning on buying a new compact tractor, so I invited everyone on my road to a "TRACTOR PARTY" with free food and beer so long as they drove their tractors to the party so I could look them over and ask them questions. Eight tractors showed up along with their owners and we had a great time. One thing that all nine of us agreed on was that the new JD 4000 series tractors (two were there)were not as well built as the old 70 series (two were there). Even if this is not true, the perception that it is true should be a problem for JD. Can anyone tell me what is going on. I assume JD is not stupid, but this 4000 vs 70 series thing has me baffeled.

Well, it is impossible to determine which is better built unless you took them apart and looked at the manufacturing processes and product design, unless of course you had some statistical data. I bet your group thinks a 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham is better built than a 1999 STS Seville (just kidding). Honestly, how did your group come to this conclusion? What were some of the things you noticed? Appreciate your comments.. ....

Reuben, I tend to agree the 70 series are a much better built tractor. JD should have stuck with them. They are a proven tractor. And none of them had any faults. I would beg someone to find me an inherante problem with any 70 series tractor------Now the 4000 series is a whole different matter. My neighbors 4300 pow. rev has been recalled. ....

Its my understanding that the 4000's are made of alittle less qulity so it would be price comparitve to the kubota's.At least that is what I was told by the jd / kabota dealer where I bought a 755 over a year ago. I looked at both tractors and spec. sheets. I thought the 4000's was a better looking tractor but as far as owning one for along time I felt the older units would out last the new ones.just my opioun ....

Its nothing new that people buy more on price than they do quality. And No-one will doubt the fact that JD was starting to lose their shirt on the 70 series units. Why? well the local "Asian market tractor" was a few franklins cheaper. Guess what people, WE control the market, and WE lean toward price over quality. I'm sure many would disagree with that statement, yet what would be the first thing out of their mouth at a dealership? "What's the best you can do on price?" When was the last time you said "What's the best you can do in quality & reliability?" No different than why the little general store's are disapearing. We all go to Wallmart, because that little yellow smiley face on TV has the best price, and all in one place. As long as we keep making the choice to buy things based more on price than quality......Quality will keep diminishing.... "Supply & Demand" ....

You are so right about that.. Exactly what you said about Wal-Mart is why I don't ever shop at Wal-Mart. I want quaulity!!! Not some cheap knock off I find at Wal-Mart. I hate everything about Wal-Mart. I support the guys that are disappearing.. the people, the Pros that can really help me, and sell me quaulity items.. I don't go for the White Trash Magnet named Wal-Mart. You are the first person I have ever seen sum up what I have been trying to say to people about skimping on price vs. quaulity.. I buy Macintosh Computers, why? Quaulity! they are superior machines to PC's that people tend to just put up with because they saved a few lousy hundred dollars. I buy John Deere, because I know I want a machine that is engineered and easier to use and work on than a Kubota..thanksJason ....

I own a 70 series jd (870, 28 hp.) and cannot find any problems with it. i owned mine for 5 years now and only to dealer one time to get a new 440 loader installed. i do all my own maint. and am very impressed with the quality of this machine. i believe that this compact series (70 ) was one of deere's best products aside from the 2150-2750 utility tractors made in germany. only complaint is that the loader is not quite strong enough to handle 4x5 round bales bales comfortably. ....

Hay, You are right about the 70 series. I recently moved 2500 miles across country. My wife tried to talk me into selling my 870 and buying a new tractor after the move. Since I wanted to stay green the only choice for a new one was the JD 4300 to replace my 870. I said forget it. She said --- we are NOT hauling that thing 2500 miles. Well I ended up hauling it 2500 miles to my new home since I was afraid I would never find another 870 to replace it---Glad I did now. Yes, the ultimate tractor would be a 70's series with a reliable hydro. But thats not going to happen. So for probably my lifetime I will stick to my trusty 870. regards Mike t. ....

Can't argue with Jason on his stance with JD products. But I do prefer quality over quaulity - at the best price of course. ;-) ....
